SHINE Element 1: Participation in the CACFP

Overview

Guidance for implementing the criteria for Element 1, Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Participation, of the Preschools Shaping Healthy Impressions through Nutrition and Exercise (SHINE) program.

Criteria for Element 1, Participation in the CACFP

  1. Participate in the CACFP

  2. Comply with federal and state requirements.

The CACFP provides reimbursement for healthy meals and snacks served to children and adults. Young children in the CACFP receive nutritious meals and snacks, develop healthy eating and physical activity habits, and CACFP Operators gain access to online and in-person training.

Follow the practices below to meet the criteria for Element 1

  1. Participate in the CACFP:

    • To apply for CACFP participation, access the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) CACFP How to Apply to the CACFP web page.

2. Comply with federal and state requirements:

  • A Preschools SHINE program must comply with all CACFP regulations, including meal pattern requirements.
  • Visit the CDSS CACFP Meal Patterns web page for information on the CACFP meal patterns for children.
