Long Description for Figure 2: Grains Flowchart

This web page provides written details for Figure 2. Flowchart 2 in the Flowchart for Determining Creditable Grain Products in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), to assist CACFP Operators in determining if a grain product other than a breakfast or infant cereal is creditable in the CACFP.

The top box to the far left in the flowchart states Start here, with an arrow asking the first question, “Is the grain product a breakfast or infant cereal?”

If the answer to the first question is Yes, provided in a box to the right of this question, the reader is instructed to “See reverse side for information on crediting breakfast and infant cereals.” If the answer to the first question is No, provided in a box directly below this question, the reader is asked a second question, “Is the product’s first grain ingredient (or second after water) a creditable grain (i.e., whole grain, enriched grain, bran, or germ)?”

If the answer to the second question is Yes, provided in a box to the left of this question, there is an arrow leading to a box with the word Creditable in it, meaning that the grain product is creditable. If the answer the second question is No, provided in a box directly below this question, the reader is asked a third question, “Do all of the following five enrichment nutrients immediately follow the product’s first grain ingredient: thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), folic acid (B9), and iron (Fe)?”

If the answer to the third question is Yes, provided in a box to the left of this question, there is an arrow leading to a box with the word Creditable in it, meaning that the grain product is creditable. If the answer the third question is No, provided in a box directly below this question, the reader is asked a fourth question, “Is the product labeled as “enriched”, “whole grain”, or “whole wheat”?”

If the answer to the fourth question is Yes, provided in a box to the left of this question, there is an arrow leading to a box with the word Creditable in it, meaning that the grain product is creditable. If the answer the fourth question is No, provided in a box directly below this question, the reader is asked a fifth question, “Does the CACFP Operator have documentation from the manufacturer stating that the product’s first grain ingredient is enriched with the five enrichment nutrients?”
