Child’s Race

The Child’s Race information field indicates the race of the child enrolled in subsidized child care services through an agency’s contract. The race categories are from the questions asked by the U.S. Census Bureau and are defined as follows:

• American Indian or Alaska Native: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America), and who maintains a tribal affiliation or community attachment.
• Asian: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, or Vietnam.
• Black or African American: A person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.
• Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands.
• White: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.

Where to Find It

On the CCD 26 Form, look in the box “Race” in Section IV: Data on Children. See the codes below for each race.

Rules and Guidelines

• This information field is optional.
• May select all racial categories that apply.
• There are five racial categories
  • American Indian or Alaska Native [1 on the CCD 26]
  • Asian [2 on the CCD 26]
  • Black or African American [3 on the CCD 26]
  • Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander [4 on the CCD 26]
  • White [5 on the CCD 26]
• For each of these racial categories, select either “Yes", "No”, or leave blank if no response.

Frequently Asked Questions

• The child’s race is unknown or the parent is not sure whether to answer “Yes” or “No” in the different categories. What should I do?
  • This judgment is up to the parent; however, this field is optional and may be left blank if unknown.
• On the CCD-26 Form for one of our children indicates the race is both Asian and White. I’ve answered “Yes” to both these categories. What do I answer for the remaining race categories?
  • If no other race is known, answer “No”, or leave blank to the remaining race categories.
• The parent did not provide a response to “Yes” or “No”. What should I do?
  • Each race field is optional and may be left blank.
