Notes from the Training Bureau - December 2, 1998

The parties reached settlement in the Beno and Welch cases. The State agreed to divide $40 million equally among class members. Each class member would receive $39.31. This payment is exempt income for CalWORKs. Recipients do not have to report this income to the county. People who do not receive checks will not be able to ask the state or county for the money and there is no right to a state hearing to dispute the amount of or lack of receipt of the settlement payment.
