Independent Adoption Center Client Assistance Information
The California Department of Social Services is reviewing all active adoption case files provided to the Department regarding the Independent Adoption Center.
Active Adoption Cases
If you have a child placed in your home and have not completed the adoption process the Department of Social Services can assist you in finalizing the adoption. Please, contact the Department’s Adoption Policy Unit at (916) 657-1858 or via e-mail at apu@dss.ca.gov. If you are in the process of completing, or have completed, your adoption home study with the Independent Adoption Center, you may wish to contact another adoption agency or an adoption attorney to determine the next steps for continuing your adoption process. For your convenience we have provided a list of private adoption agencies in California. The Department of Social Services also provides services related to independent adoptions and is available to help.
If you are a birth parent who previously placed your child with the Independent Adoption Center and you wish to update your records please contact the Adoption Services Bureau at (916) 651-8089.
If you are a birth parent who has been working with the Independent Adoption Center and you have any questions regarding the next steps in the placement of your child you may contact the Adopotion Policy Unit at (916) 657-1858.
If you are a former IAC client and have questions regarding obtaining distributions of money from the IAC bankruptcy please read the following instructions provided by the IAC Trustee’s attorney:
For a creditor (in this case, a family) to participate in distributions of money from a bankruptcy case, he or she must complete and file with the bankruptcy court a proof of claim by the deadline set by the court. The Proof of Claim form on the United States Courts website. It should be completed and mailed to the Clerk, United States Bankruptcy Court, 1300 Clay Street, Third Floor, Oakland, CA 94612 by the deadline set by the court. The claim form must contain the name of the debtor (Independent Adoption Agency, Inc.) and the bankruptcy case number (17-40327 RLE).

If you were a client of the Independent Adoption Center and have completed an adoption in California, the Department has secured the case files.
