Long Description for Figure 1: Grains Flowchart

This web page provides written details for Figure 1. Flowchart 1, in the Flowchart for Determining Creditable Grain Products in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), to assist CACFP Operators in determining if a breakfast or infant cereal is creditable in the CACFP.

The top box to the far right in the flowchart states Start here, with an arrow asking the first question, “Is the product a cereal?”

If the answer to the first question is No, provided in a box directly below this question, the reader is instructed to See reverse side for information on crediting other types of grains. If the answer to the first question is Yes, provided in a box to the left of this question, the reader is asked a second question, “Is it a breakfast cereal?”

If the answer to the second question is No, provided in a box to the left of this question, the reader is asked a third question, “Is it an infant cereal?”, and the only option is to select Yes in a box directly below this question, after which the reader is asked a series of questions to determine if the infant cereal is creditable.

The first question to determine if an infant cereal is creditable is, “Is the cereal listed as an approved cereal in any state agency’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Authorized Food Shopping List?”

If the answer to the first infant cereal question is Yes, provided in a box to the right of this question, there is an arrow pointing down to a box with the word Creditable in it, meaning that the infant cereal is creditable. If the answer to the first infant cereal question is No, provided in a box directly below this question, the reader is asked a second infant cereal question, “Is the infant cereal iron-fortified?”

If the answer to the second infant cereal question is Yes, provided in a box to the left and below this question, there is an arrow pointing to a box with the word Creditable in it, meaning that the infant cereal is creditable. If the answer to the second infant cereal question is No, provided in a box directly below this question, there is an arrow pointing to a box with the words Not Creditable in it, meaning that the infant cereal is not creditable.

The second question is the final question for infant cereals in the flowchart.

Returning to the top of the flowchart, if the answer to the second question, “Is it a breakfast cereal?” is Yes, provided in a box directly below this question, the reader is asked a series of questions to determine if the breakfast cereal is creditable. The first question the reader is asked to determine if a breakfast cereal is creditable is, “Is the cereal listed as an approved cereal in any state agency’s WIC Authorized Food Shopping List?”

If the answer to the first breakfast cereal question is Yes, provided in a box to the right of this question, there is an arrow pointing to a box with the word Creditable in it, meaning that the breakfast cereal is creditable. If the answer to the first breakfast cereal question is No, provided in a box directly below this question, the reader is asked a second breakfast cereal question, “Does the cereal meet the sugar limit?”

If the answer to the second breakfast cereal question is No, provided in a box to the left and below this question, there is an arrow pointing to a box with the word Not Creditable in it, meaning that the breakfast cereal is not creditable. If the answer to the second breakfast cereal question is Yes, provided in a box directly below this question, the reader is asked a third breakfast cereal question, “Is the product fortified?”

If the answer to the third breakfast cereal question is Yes, provided in a box to the right of this question, there is an arrow pointing to a box with the word Creditable in it, meaning that the breakfast cereal is creditable. If the answer to the third breakfast cereal question is No, provided in the box directly below this question, the reader is asked a fourth breakfast cereal question, “Is the first grain ingredient a creditable grain (i.e., whole grain, enriched grain, bran, or germ)?”

If the answer to the fourth breakfast cereal question is Yes, provided in a box to the right and above this question, there is an arrow pointing to a box with the word Creditable in it, meaning that the breakfast cereal is creditable. If the answer to the fourth breakfast cereal question is No, provided in a box to the left and above this question, there is an arrow pointing to a box with the words Not Creditable in it, meaning that the breakfast cereal is not creditable.

The fourth question is the final question for breakfast cereals in the flowchart.
