CalWORKs Expanded Subsidized Employment (ESE)

The CalWORKs Expanded Subsidized Employment (ESE) Program is designed to provide meaningful work opportunities for individuals receiving CalWORKs benefits. This initiative helps participants gain valuable job skills, work experience, and financial stability, paving the way to long-term employment and self-sufficiency.

Program Highlights:

  • Real-World Experience: Participants are placed in real job settings, where they can learn on the job and build their resumes.
  • Supportive Environment: Employers receive subsidies to help cover wages, creating more opportunities for participants to be hired.
  • Skill Development: The program focuses on developing essential job skills that are in demand in today's job market.
  • Pathway to Employment: By gaining hands-on experience, participants increase their chances of securing permanent employment.

The ESE Program not only benefits participants but also supports local businesses by providing them with enthusiastic and motivated workers. Through collaboration and support, we aim to create a stronger, more resilient workforce.

  • To be potentially eligible for CalWORKs ESE, you must be a current recipient of CalWORKs, or a non-custodial parent of a child receiving CalWORKs benefits, and able to participate in Welfare to Work activities.
  • Current recipients, and individuals who discontinue from CalWORKs due to excess income, may participate in ESE in six-month intervals, up to 12 months.
  • Formerly aided individuals who received CalWORKs benefits may also be potentially eligible if the local county office offers job retentions or post-aid services.
  • Ask your worker if ESE is an available Welfare to Work activity in your county, and if so, how does one participate?
  • Community resources, including the local Workforce Development Board, may have subsidized employment opportunities if your county does not offer the ESE program.
