Repatriation

Refugee Programs Bureau (RPB)

The United States (U.S.) Repatriation Program provides temporary assistance to U.S. citizens and their dependents that are identified by the U.S. Department of State as needing to return from a foreign country to the U.S. due to destitution, illness, war, threat of war, or a similar crisis, and because they are without resources immediately accessible to meet their needs. The Program is managed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families’ Office of Human Services Emergency Preparedness and Response (OHSEPR). Services are provided through the Repatriation Program in the form of a repayable loan to the U.S. government, not an entitlement. To repatriate back to the U.S., the repatriate must contact the U.S. Embassy in the foreign country in which they are currently living. For questions regarding the State's role in the Repatriation Program, please contact the Refugee Programs Bureau.
