Services to Older Refugees

The Services to Older Refugees (SOR) Program provides funding to assist refugees who are 60 years of age or older.  Services provided under the SOR Program:

  • Establishes and/or expands working relationships between refugee service providers and local Area Agencies on Aging to ensure that older refugees are linked to mainstream senior services
  • Assists older refugees with the naturalization process, particularly those individuals who have lost, or are at risk of losing, their Supplemental Security Income benefits due to their noncitizen status.

The Refugee Programs Bureau (RPB) allocates SOR funding to impacted counties based on the number of older refugees in the counties receiving public assistance. Please see Funding Letters for annual funding allocations.

The SOR is awarded by the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) to states through a formula grant process.  ORR allocated ASA-funds for an Afghan specific Services to Older Refugees (ASOR) in FY 22, within the Refugee Support Services (RSS) Services to Older Refugees (SOR) set-aside program. This funding is meant to serve certain citizens or nationals of Afghanistan resettled to the United States aged 60 years or older.
